GREEN GIRL LOVES: John Masters Organics Hair Care
A stylist at top salons in New York and Miami in the ‘70s, a fashion and celebrity darling in the ‘80s, John Masters could have gone the way of any other mega-famous hairstylist: Select appearances with key celebrities at carefully staged pre-awards show events, while minions at salons in big-five cities push chemical treatments for hundreds of dollars and women in stores around the globe pay a few dollars for OTC similar chemicals with the John Masters name but without the minion (or bragging rights). After all the money’s in mass, right?
Wrong, according to John. Because after 20 years in the industry, he woke up to the reality of the serious health risks inhaling chemicals day after day in the salon posed for him and his—you guessed it—minions. He started seeing clients in his New York apartment and mixing up non-toxic treatments in his kitchen, then launched The John Masters Organics salon—the first “clean-air” salon to eschew perms, manicures, chem-based hair color and even hair spray—in Soho in 1994, and the first comprehensive, luxury-organic hair care line, John Masters Organics, shortly thereafter. Paraben-free, organic skin care was soon to follow, and now the brand is sold in 20 countries.
See, this is the cool thing about the John Masters story. Here’s a guy who was so ahead of the trend he was doing this when many of us newbie greenies were still in diapers. And yes, Wella, it was more expensive to produce his organic products. And yes, Frederic Fekkai, it was probably a leap of faith to go from big-name editorial shoots to styling chem-free hair in his apartment. But he’s been wildly successful, on his own totally conscious, eco-friendly terms. If that’s not a green fairy tale, we don’t know what is.
